General Notes: Michal Schaffner was born near Frankfurt on Main, Germany in 1721. His wife was Margetha Vogleman. When his brother-in-law Malachi Vogleman returned to Germany, from America to marry his childhood sweetheart, his description of the new country persuaded Michal and his family to come back with him.
They landed at Philadelphia in 1760 and went to Alamance, Orange County, North Carolina. They settled on land situated between the Stinking Quarter and the Great Alamance Creeks. In common with his neighbors who were Anglicizing their Deutch names, Michal changed his from Michal Schaffner to Michael Shoffner. Both spellings are on his monument. Later some of his descendants further simplified it to Shofner.
The first Federal Census of 1790 contains the names of Michael and his sons. They were shown owning together at that date about one thousand acres of land. They were early slave owners and some African American people of the area bear the name Shoffner.
On May 16, 1771 the Battle of Alamance Creek was fought on Shoffner land. Some historians estimate that two thousand Regulars and twelve hundred British troops took part in this engagement in which two hundred farmers were killed or wounded. A monument stands on the field now which reads: "Here was fought the first battle for American Freedom"/ Three of Michael's sons served in the War of the American Revolution. They were Michael Jr., George and Martin Frederick and Peter were too young.
Michael Fogleman (a descendant of Michael Shoffner) is said to have a copy of the oath of allegiance taken by the first Michael Shoffner in August 1778. He also has a receipt from Lord Cornwall's commissary for six head of cattle which were requisitioned from Michael by the British Army while stationed near his home. It is also recorded that Michael was one of the Joint Committee to call the first resident Lutheran pastor in Burlington, North Carolina.
The graves of Michael and Margetha are well marked and are in St Paul's Lutheran churchyard about two miles from the town of Alamance.

Michael married Margaretja Fogleman, daughter of George Fogleman and Catherine Curtiss. Margaretja was born on Aug 3, 1724 in Frankfurt-On-Main, Germany and died in Aug 1796 in Orange County, NC at age 72.

He served in Capt. William Huston's Company, Col. Francis Locke's Regiment, General Rutherfords's Brigade. He marched from Charleston to Savannah to Turkey Creek. He served under Capt. John Starnes, in Col. Davidson's Regiment as a light horseman from 1779 to 1781, in which he furnished his own horse and frequently his own provisions. He was engaged in the suppression of the Tories while the British occupied Charlotte in Mecklenburg County. In 1780 he volunteered in Capt. Joseph Shin's Company, Col. Smith's Regiment. He served in the Wilmington Expedition. He was crossing the Savannah River to engage the enemy on the other side when General Nash came galloping up and dashed into the river while retreating. He was discharged by Col. Smith on the Cape Fear River near Raleigh, NC, after the surrender of Cornwallis on October 19, 1781.

Hello Cousins and Friends,
I am answering to the list so I can send my information to everyone who may have an interest in what I have to contribute. Thank you to all of you that have written me individually and I will reply individually as you have asked about different aspects. I have read through the archives for this list and found all your comments very interesting and thought provoking. I totally agree that the use of primary evidence is very important in the research of these lines of Shofner/Shoffner (and yesterday I encountered a Schoffner). For a while now I have been thinking that we may have a case of two or more Henry Shofners.

~In the "History of Kentucky" that I have that originally belonged to David Miller, The article on Miller written up in this book states that his Henry Shofner was of "Dutch" descent. I think that it may be true that what is meant here is the term "Pennsylvania Dutch" (or what is referred to as "Dutch" in the biographical write up in this book), people commonly called by the misnomer and misspelling of the German word "Deutsche" (meaning German), now called PA Dutch, I hope you get what I mean. The ear hears Dutch when the person from Germany is saying "Deutsche", meaning of German descent.

~As to Henry Shofner's placement in the Shofner family and whether or not he was an immigrant I also have more questions.

~As Bill Atwood notes, in the 1790 census of Penn. there are 5 Shofners listed and two of them are Henry. And as Steve, KLoose2268@aol.com, notes in the Mercer County, Ky., tax lists of 1794-1809, there are again two Henrys. And again in 1787 a Henry Shofner is mentioned on a deed in NC, according to, Anita Dennis. There are also several more sources from this list I could
site, but I think my point is made. The only answer is more research.

~Of my own research, I am interested in finding more of the records of the voyages of the ship, Friendship. I note that the voyage of the 16th of Oct. 1727 has been referred to on this list before. I have collected several lists of any names that might be similar to Shofner.

~I can take my own line back to Henry Shofner, or should I say 'a' Henry Shofner. The question then being was there more than one Shofner to come over from the Palatinate of Germany or was there one Shofner and all subsequent Henry's (etc.) his descendants.

~As to the book by Roy Shoffner which contains the biography of his father, Col. Arthur Ray Shoffner, as well as the genealogy of this branch of the Shofner/ Shoffner family. It still can be purchased from my sister Mrs. M.J. Howard. Her Addy is shoffner@cyou.com Due to a problem with her provider, if the addy is not typed in each time, it doesn't get to her. The research for the genealogy in this book is largely her work, but my father, Col. A.R. Shoffner, also referred to as "Ray" was the one who began the research in the 50's and 60's. He didn't finish that work but got his kids involved and they finished it.
I am actually their half sister, but we've always just said brother and sisters.

I'm the one who has reason to believe that one of those Henry Shofner names
in the 1790 Pa census records is the Henry who moved to Mercer county, then Green county.

My line goes like this: Henry Shofner > Charles H. Shofner > Jacob Joseph Shofner > Millard Fillmore
Shofner > Doc Shofner > Anne Elizabeth Shofner > William Shofner Attwood (Me)

The following is the explanation which I believe lays down the basis for discussion into the possibility that Henry, Chloe, and four children traveled from NC/SC to Pennsylvania before moving to Kentucky by March 16, 1792 when one of the daughters was born. This excerpt comes from my Logical Conclusions which relate Henry Shofner and Charles H. Shofner, in the absence of primary evidence.

16. The origin of Charles Shofner's birthplace is somewhat sketchy; however, the research into this problem reveals some very interesting information!!! Jacob Joseph Shofner is my gg grandfather who lived from 1827-1912. His death certificate from Henderson County, Ky. reveals that his father was Charles Shofner and mother Elizabeth Jones. It says on Jacob Joseph's death certificate that Charles Shofner was born in Ky. I believe that the born in Ky. is incorrect, because of the following. In the 1900 census, when Jacob Joseph Shofner was living with his son's (Millard Fillmore Shofner) family the census taker recorded that Jacob Joseph Shofner was born in Sept. 1827 and his age was recorded as 72 years old.

The specificity of this information implies that the census taker was being as precise as possible; therefore, the fact that he recorded that Jacob Joseph Shofner's father was born in PENNSYLVANIA leads this researcher to ascertain that the question was asked directly of him. Also, the following census of 1910 showed that the census taker (Robert Utley) did not ask questions of JJ Shofner directly, having several bits of information incorrect, including his age. I have the original Bible page which states that Jacob Joseph Shofner was born Sept. 28, 1827!

My mother's first cousin was from Smith Mills, Ky. and knew the two different census takers who recorded the information from 1900 and 1910. She stated with assurance that the census taker in 1900 was a more thorough person in his recording of details than the other census taker in 1910 who would have assumed some facts without asking people directly. Susan Elizabeth Nelson Stegman is that lady. She turned 90 this year (1998), lives in Alhambra, Ca., and would dearly love to be included in the DAR on the strength of this research. So if indeed Charles Shofner was born in Pa. circa June 22, 1791, then there must be a Shofner there then. The 1790 census reveals five Shofner families in Dauphin County, Pa., including two named Henry Shofner!! One of these has children's ages listed which correspond to the approximate ages of David, Robert, Catherine, and Elizabeth, all known children of Henry Shofner.
This Henry Shofner lived in the town of Lebanon, Dauphin County, Pa. in the 1790 census.

The other Henry Shofner did not have children which would relate to the ages of the four children that Henry and Chloe already had. The only Henry Shofner who could be the one who was the Revolutionary Soldier from NC was the one who lived in the town of Lebanon, Dauphin County, Pa

To Steve, I had never heard you say that there were two Henry Shofner names on the tax lists of Mercer Co. I guess that I didn't check your information that closely, but I wasn't even aware of this possibility. I think this needs to be resolved in one way or another, in other words, were there really two Henry Shofners or the same one listed twice, and if there were two just how are they related. Just my gut feeling, but I would imagine that there was just one Henry (our Rev. War Henry) who had multiple listings on the tax rolls. I have seen other people's names show up numerous times on the tax rolls relating to multiple tracts of land.

In addition, I have always felt that I needed to find more children of Charles H. Shofner and Elizabeth Jones who lived to 1900 and find out just what it says about the birthplace of their father, much like my Jacob Joseph Shofner.

The known children of Charles H. Shofner are:

My cousin knew that Belle was the younger sister of Jacob Joseph Shofner and married a man named Henry Johnson in Owensboro, Ky. That line has disappeared! But before this in the 1850 census of Harrison County, Indiana there is a John White and wife Sarah living next door to Jacob Joseph Shofner, and living with them is her sister, Isabelle Shofner.

Charles Hart Shofner and Elizabeth (Betty) Jones had the following children:

13 i. Benjamin Shofner was born in Green County, Kentucky 1810. He married Sarah Elkins 29 January 1835.

18 vi. Elizabeth Sabina Shofner was born in Green County, Kentucky 27 October 1822. Elizabeth died 21 March 1892 at 69 years of age. She married Presley Pearman 18 August 1842.

19 vii. Charles Danial Shofner was born in Green County, Kentucky 1825-1826. He married Malvina T. Kelly 14 January 1849.

20 viii. Jacob Joseph Shofner was born in Green County, Kentucky 28 September 1827. Jacob died 13 February 1912 at 84 years of age. He married Mary M. Williams 23 October 1849.

21 ix. Irabel Shofner was born in Kentucky 1833

His Irabel is my Isabelle. Also, Jacob Joseph Shofner married Mary Margaret Kelley Williams who is probably a sister of Malvina T. Kelly. So it "appears" that two brothers married two sisters.

So if it were possible to find any other of the brothers or sisters of Jacob Joseph Shofner in the 1900 census, they might have also stated that their father "Charles H. Shofner" was born in Pa.and this would be more evidence to indicate that indeed the Rev War soldier Henry Shofner and family were in Penn. after leaving NC/SC on their way to eventually living in Green county, KY.

Hello Henry Shofner experts. May I ask a novice question? Today I was at the Filson Club in Louisville and in the Rev. War Abstracts book in the Green County, KY section it listed:

SHOFNER or SHOFFNER: Henry. North Carolina. #S.1456H.
On August 21 of the year 1832 in Green County in the state of Kentucky, the said pensioner at the age of 77 years appeared in open court and stated that he had been drafted to serve for a tour of five months duration in Hicklenberg County in the state of North Carolina in the month of November of the yar 1778 and he also stated that he was honorably dischared at Turkey Creek on the Savannah River in the state of South Carolina in the month of May of that year..................................The affidavit of Charles Hart was also given at the same time and in the same place as the foregoing..................................said pensioner and this desponent further added that he himself had served in the War of the Revolution with said pensioner.

Now for my dumb question...........is this the Henry Shofner under discussion and is he the one who was the father of Catherine Shoffner and husband of Chloe Hart?
The same Henry who died in Green Co. in August 28, 1847? Is so, is this Charles his father-in-law?

If these are the father and grandfather of Catherine Shoffer who married Robert Rachford, I wanted to send for copies of the Rev. War papers.

You are partially right. Henry Shofner is the father of Catherine Shofner who married Robert Rachford. But Charles Hart (Rev War Soldier who lived in Mercer County, Ky) is the brother of Chloe Hart, and brother-in-law of Henry Shofner. This we all believe to be true, but I have never seen any documentation to prove this fact.
Most researchers also believe that Chloe Hart and Charles Hart's father was also named Charles Hart who married a Klera (last name I'm not sure).

General Notes: Logical Conclusions which relate Henry SHOFNER and Charles H. SHOFNER

Question: Is Charles SHOFNER (b.ca. 1790-91 Pa.) the son of Henry SHOFNER (1755-1847)?

1. When Charles SHOFNER first appears on the Green Co. tax rolls in 1812 there is no older SHOFNER
than Henry SHOFNER. This implies that Charles SHOFNER is either:
a. the son of Henry SHOFNER, or
b. the son of some other SHOFNER who has never been on the tax rolls. Most researchers are in
agreement that it seems implausible that Charles could be the son of some phantom older SHOFNER who isn't known to anybody!

2. There is NO SHOFNER listed in Green County, Ky. in the early days other than Henry SHOFNER
(No SHOFNER has been found by me or any other researcher, yet!)

3 Henry SHOFNER has four sons and six daughters who are linked to him in various ways; however, none have been linked to Charles SHOFNER. Charles remains the only
SHOFNER not yet linked to Henry SHOFNER or any of the other ten children.

4. Henry SHOFNER has two known sons, David SHOFNER and Robert SHOFNER, who were shoemakers.
Charles SHOFNER was a shoemaker, also. (census and court records from Green County, Ky.)

5. Henry SHOFNER took in indentured children to teach them farming, and Charles SHOFNER taught
indentured children the art of shoemaking. (Green Co. court records) <like father,like son>

6. Henry SHOFNER and Charles SHOFNER are in the Green Co. census in 1820 and 1830. In fact, the
only two SHOFNERs listed in the 1820 census are Henry and Charles. Other SHOFNERs had their names misspelled. <this implies that the census taker in 1820 knew that Henry and Charles were related>

7. Henry SHOFNER named a son Jacob SHOFNER, and Charles SHOFNER named one of his sons
Jacob Joseph SHOFNER, <this name Jacob was used by other generations>

8. Mrs. Carter (a SHOFNER researcher who lived in Washington D.C. and researched the Shofner line
from ~1965-1990's) had a grocery store list from Campbellsville, Ky. (from DAR records) which has
both Henry SHOFNER and Charles SHOFNER on the same list as having bought items at the store.
<This shows that they were in the same store during the same time period> If this list is a credit list
of patrons who owed the store owner money for goods, then that would be another inference like
#5 above.

9. Mrs. Carter believed that Henry SHOFNER and Charles HART (his brother-in-law, but some people
now believe Charles HART was the father of Chloe HART) were lifelong friends. They fought together
in the Revolutionary Was in North Carolina and South Carolina in 1780. Then, Charles HART traveled
to Mercer County, Ky., and Henry SHOFNER followed as early as 1792. In 1832, Charles HART testified for
Henry SHOFNER in Green Co. to verify Henry's Revolutionary War Record. It then appears entirely
plausible that Henry SHOFNER would have named a son Charles H. SHOFNER for Charles HART.
( I haven't seen evidence that H. is in fact HART, but other researchers believe that. If Charles H. SHOFNER is Charles Hart SHOFNER then that would be the most compelling evidence for Charles being the son of Henry.)

10.Charles SHOFNER appears on the Green County, Ky. Tax Rolls 15 times from 1812-1836 (25 year
period). Tax rolls are not available for six years (1824, 25, 26, 31, 32, and 33); therefore, Charles appears in 15 of the 19 available years. Henry SHOFNER appears in 17 of the 19
years. During 13 of the 19 years Charles and Henry both appear. The significance of this is the particular way that SHOFNER was spelled. In the years 1812,13,14,17,19,20,21,22, and 23 both Henry and Charles' last name was spelled correctly as SHOFNER. In 1828, SHOFNER was mispelled as SHOFFNER for both Henry and Charles. In 1829 and 30 SHOFNER was again spelled correctly for both. Finally, in 1834 the SHOFNER name was misspelled as SHOFTNER for both.
In summary, 13 out of 13 times (perfect linear correlation), their last names were spelled the same; even though, during two years their last names were misspelled the same. <this implies that the persons responsible for compiling the Tax Rolls knew that Henry and Charles were related
even while misspelling their names at least twice.( this information was from the tax rolls xeroxed by the Mormon Library)

11.Also, from the Green Co. tax rolls from 1813-1818, the SHOFNERS were in various Military
Companies, probably as a result of the War of 1812. In 1813, Henry, David, Robert, and Charles SHOFNER were all in Capt. J. Marshall's Company. In 1815 and 1816, Henry, David, and
Robert were in Capt. White's and Capt. W. Parrott's Companies, respectively. In 1817, all four were
in Capt. Parrott's Company. <more research into this area is needed. Do other fathers and sons appear in the same company? Is this a common occurence?>

12.Henry SHOFNER is the first SHOFNER to appear on the Green County, Ky. Tax Rolls in 1799, and continues until 1834. Henry SHOFNER is the only SHOFNER on the tax rolls until 1803 (remember, there are no tax books available for the years 1824,25,26, and 1831,32,33.). In 1823, Henry SHOFNER owned 200 acres of land. In 1827, he owned 149 acres, and in 1834 he owned 137 acres. Then in 1835 and '36 he is not listed on the tax rolls. Charles SHIFNER's tax record shows that for 18 years (1812-30) he did not own any land. In the next available tax year (1834) Charles and Samuel SHOFNER appear on the record with 50 acres each.
Where did they get this land? How could they afford it?
Mrs. Agnes Carter told me (Bill Attwood) that in many cases Revolutionary War Veterans did not have
a Will because at the time of their death the bulk of their estate had been given to their children in consideration for love, comfort, and care, and to be protected in their old age.(she said it a little differently, so I am not quoting her exactly).Why did they do this? Her conclusions were:

a. These men had to be in a state of need in order to receive their Revolutionary War Pension check.
b. To appear to the court in this manner, Mrs Carter believed that Henry gave away the entire bulk of this land to his children, and doesn't show up on the tax rolls anymore, because he has no
possessions to be taxed.
A interesting side note, what did Charles do with this 50 acres?
I agree with the conclusion of Mrs. Carter. <one researcher believes that Samuel is the son of Charles, are there others?>

13.The origin of Charles SHOFNER's birthplace is somewhat sketchy; however, the research into this problem reveals some very interesting information!!! Jacob Joseph SHOFNER is my g-g grandfather who lived from (1827-1912). His death certificate from Henderson County, Ky. reveals that his father was Charles SHOFNER who was born in Ky. I believe that the "born in Ky." is incorrect, because of the following. In the 1900 census, when Jacob Joseph SHOFNER was living with his son's (Millard Fillmore SHOFNER) family the census taker recorded that Jacob Joseph SHOFNER was born in Sept 1827 and his age was correctly recorded as 72 years old. The specificity of this information implies that the census taker was being as thorough as possible; therefore, the fact that he recorded that Jacob Joseph SHOFNER's father was born in Pennsylvania leads this researcher to ascertain that the question was asked directly of him. Also, the following census of 1910 showed that the taker did not ask questions of JJ SHOFNER directly, having several bits of information incorrect, including his age.
I have the original Bible page which states that Jacob Joseph SHOFNER was born Sept 28, 1827!
My mother's first cousin (90 years old this year,1998), knew the census takers who recorded the information from 1900 and 1910 (from Smith Mills, Henderson Co.) and stated emphatically that the census taker in 1900 was a more thorough person in his recording of details than the other census taker in 1910 who would have assumed some facts without asking people directly. Susan Elizabeth Nelson Stegman is that lady. She lives in Alhambra, Ca. and would dearly love to be included in the DAR on the strength of this research.
So if indeed Charles SHOFNER was born in Pa. circa 1790-91 (1813-21=1791), then there must be a
SHOFNER there then. The 1790 Pa. census reveals five SHOFNER families in Dauphin County, including
two named Henry SHOFNER!! One has children's ages listed which correspond to the approximate
ages of David, Robert, Catherine, and Elizabeth, all known children of Henry SHOFNER.

On Charles H. Shofner: Jan 13, 1999

He was born circa 1791, possibly June 1791 in Pa. not 1785 in NC. He shows up on the
Green County, Ky Tax Rolls in 1812, so 21 from 1812 is 1791. If he were born in 1785, he would be on
the tax rolls in 1896.

In the 1900 census of Millard Fillmore Shofner family in Henderson,Ky.
it clearly states that Jacob Joseph Shofner's father (who is Charles Shofner) was born in Pennsylvania.

The 1790 census of Dauphin County, Pa. has two Henry Shofner names, onewho meets the
criteria for being Henry Shofner (Rev. War Soldier) with children the ages related to David, Robert,
Catherine and Elizabeth.
Charles H. Shofner was probably, with all intents and purposes, the 5th child. Born in 1791
in Pa., before they moved to Mercer co.,Ky when Sallie Shofner was born Mar 16, 1792.

Please note this is not proven, but probably more reliable than NC 1785.

General Notes: July, 1999. Just wanted to let everyone know that there has been a new update on the Henry Shofner b. 1755 family group sheet.
First a little background. For years it has been perpetuated that the Lucinda that married Thomas Wright in 1819 Green County, Ky. and the Lucinda that married John C. Skaggs 1827(I'm working from memory so don't quote my dates) were one in the same person.
Then about a year ago I ran across the Robert Shofner (son of Henry) estate case from Taylor County, Ky. For those of you that are new I did transcribe that estate case and it is one my webpage and the Shofner Will board. In it, there was a mention of Lucinda & Thomas Wright of Missouri in the descendants of Robert Shofner. There for I along with several of you assumed that the Lucinda that married twice 1st to Thomas Wright and 2nd to John C. Skaggs was a daughter of Robert and not a daughter of Henry.
Well, the other day after a couple of us Shofner Researchers (Jeremy Johnson, Jeremy's grandmother, Peggy Ray and myself) met in Greensburg for a combined genealogy research trip. It was brought up during conversation about the court case.
Well Jeremy emailed me the next day and questioned about the possibility of 2 Lucinda's. What made him wonder was that he comes from (I believe so, if not Jeremy let me know) the Lucinda that married the John C. Skaggs. He knew for a fact that that Lucinda and John C. Skaggs was in Taylor County, Ky. in 1857, when the court case has Lucinda and Thomas Wright in Missouri. Well, when I got to looking at it I realized that I had wondered why if Lucinda had married Thomas Wright 1st then John C. Skaggs. Why she was named with 1st husband Thomas Wright in the 1857 court case.

Have I lost everybody yet? So I went to the Sons of the American Revolution Library here in Louisville, Ky. and looked from Thomas Wright in Missouri. I found him and Lucinda in Fishing River Township, Clay County, Missouri in 1850 and Lucinda is there in 1860. I looked in the 1850 Taylor County, Ky. Census for Lucinda and John C. Skaggs and found them there in 1850 and 1860.
So to wind this up there WERE two Lucinda's. One that is Henry Shofner (Revolutionary War Soldier) and Chloe Hart's daughter she married John C. Skaggs and stayed in Taylor County, Ky.
Then there is Robert Shofner and Elizabeth Stone's daughter Lucinda b. between 1800-1805 that married Thomas Wright 1819 in Green County, Ky. and moves to Clay County, Missouri and is named in the Robert Shofner estate case.

She was born Oct 30, 1837 in Green Co. Ky. She died Sept 4, 1914 in Owensboro, Daviess Co., Ky. I have her Death Certificate.
From what my family as told me she was raised by a Sally Hite in St. Louis, Mo. with her brother Samuel Shofner and they spoke in German. She was married Sept 2, 1859 in West Point, Hardin Co., Ky. to Henry Clay Johnson. Lived in 1860 Census Hardin Co.,Ky, 1870 they moved to Kansas City, Wyandotte Co., Kansas.
He died in 1877 in Owensboro Ky. She was in 1880 Census with Children in Owensboro, Ky. No 1890 Census in Owensboro,Ky., 1900 census with son Lorenzo Otto Johnson.

No, I have not heard of a Hite family connected to the Shofner family.
However, Isabel's grandfather was said to have come from Germany or Switzerland, so the part about speaking German sounds about right. Maybe Sally was a Shofner who married a Hite. But I don't have anything on that.

But I do have this: Isabel had a sister Sarah b.~1822. Sarah married a John White.
And I have this note on John: "in Harrison County, IN; Isabelle was living with them". So, perhaps the names Hite/White got confused somewhere . . .
Sally is a common nickname for Sarah.

In the 1870 U. S. Census, he was living in Saloma, Taylor County, Kentucky. He was family #45. He was listed as age 39 and a farmer. Missouri was age 25 and keeping house. Besides John B., age 3, there are Ruth J., age 3, William F., age 2, and Robert W., age 1. Also on this census, Lucinda Skaggs, B. O.'s mother was living on her own property next door to him. On the other side, Rebecca Jane and her husband, Henry Field and their large family of nine, were living.
In the 1880 Taylor County Census for the Oak Hill Precinct, Ben O. Skaggs was family 19. He was 45 years old, a Farmer born in Kentucky. His wife, Missouri, was 36 years old. The children were: John B., 15; Ruth, 13; William F., 11; Robert, 10; McLin, 9; Sarah, 8; Jefferson, 6; Alfred T., 5; and Mary Lou, age 2 years.
Benjamin was known as "One-eyed Ben," because of an eye injury suffered in the Civil War. Benjamin O. Skaggs is listed in the 1897 Taylor County Census. Three of his children are attending Poplar Grove School and they live in the Clipper post office area of Taylor County. The children listed are:

In 1900 he appears in the Taylor County federal census. He and his wife, Mary, and children are family #209 in the Oak Hill district. They have been married 15 years and have 5 children, all at home when the census was taken.
In 1910 he appears in the Taylor County federal census. Still living in the Oak Hill district. They have been married 25 years and Mary is listed as the mother of 5 living children. Three of them are still at home: Pleasant C., Samuel C., and Cattie H. The census indicates Ben has been married twice and Mary once.

In his later years, family history relates that he was not always a pleasant person. He came in drunk one night. Betty, the children, and the dogs were sitting by the fireplace. It was cold and they had a big fire going in the fireplace. B.O. picked up Grandma Betty (she was a very small woman) and threw her in the fireplace. Son, Robert, about 17 years old, picked up the iron poker and knocked his father unconscious. He hit him so hard that it bent the poker. Family history says this poker is still around but we do not know who has it. While B.O. was out, Robert left home and went to Indianapolis. He thought for years that he had killed his father. He did not find out differently until he returned home many years later.

I Alexander James Shofner of the County of Taylor and State of Kentucky being of sound mind do hereby on the 14th day of December in the year of our Lord One Thousand Nine hundred and eight make known my will concerning the distribution of my property which I now posess which is as follows:
To my two daughters Jennie Emiline Shofner and Mollie Ellen Shofner I bequeath all of my personal property equally divided between them and the one that lives longer than the other one, I want her to have what that one leaves that dies first and the Tract of Land which I own, I want my two daughters, whose names appear above in this writing to hold their proportional part in said land which part is each one fifth of the value of said land which consists of 120 acres in all - twenty four acres each for my two daughters. And my oldest son, John Marshall Shofner. I want him to hold his part in said land and pay my two other sons James Alexander Shofner and Hiram Bailey Shofner Fifty dollars a piece for
their interest in said land. Now, I want my two daughters and my oldest son to bear the expense of my burial.

At a regular Term of the Taylor County Court, commenced and held for Taylor County at the Court house in Campbellsville, on Monday the 4th day of January 1908 the foregoing instrument of writing reported to be the last Will and Testament of Alexander James Shofner, deceased, was produced into Court and proven by the oaths of Thomas J. Shofner, G. W. Thompson and Mason B. Thompson the three subscribing witnesses thereto, and the Court after hearing the proof concerning Said instrument of
writing established the same as the last Will and Testament of Alexander James Shofner, deceased, and as such ordered the same to record. To all of which James A. Shofner and Hiram B. Shofner by attorney excepts and prays and appeal to the Taylor Circuit Court which is granted. Whereupon I have recorded the same and this certificate in my office this 9th day of January 1909.

Ben Jones in his book "The Kentucky Legend," says that John was a leading citizen of LaRue County, a dedicated democrat and an alcoholic. He also thought that he was a Confederate Soldier in the Civil War.

From Ed Benningfield's book, Lincoln's Birth County in the Civil War, p. 131:

John R. Thompson was born on May 23, 1845 and was perhaps a son of James Thompson and Jane (Rachford) Thompson. Ben Jones described John in his book, "The Kentucky Legend," as one of the leading citizens of LaRue County, as a dyed in the wool dedicated Democrat, and as an alcoholic. He says John had many horses and cattle. Ben only knew John for about the last twenty years of John's life, but he believes he was a Confederate soldier. Likewise, John is listed by the WPA workers of the 1930s as a veteran, this when they registered graves in the 1930s. I have no specific information on which unit he served in. Ben also names Clem Thompson and Capt. Sol Thompson as Confederate soldiers from that area or perhaps Marion County or Taylor County. He mentions Clem and Sol in a letter to the author in 1987.

John was not listed by the LaRue County commissioners as a Union soldier in 1864, therefore Ben must be right about his "Johnny Reb" past. In the book, "The Old Mill Stream," Ben Jones says that John belonged to the Masonic order in good standing. He says he was first married to a Miss Farris and second to Catherine Gaddie of near Gravel Point. Ben lists John's children as follows: (four boys) John Jr., Grover, Dollie and Tom; (three girls) Sis Thompson Morris, Florence Farris and Rosy Morris. According to the 1900 census, John and his wife, Sarah, had eight children and seven were still living in 1900. John died on December 20, 1923 and is buried in the Bethel Cemetery near Levelwood.

I made a check of the LaRue County marriage records and John's marriage to Mollie Farris was in February of 1876. It was his second marriage. In November of 1879, he married a third time to Catherine Grimes.

It was this third wife, Mary C, that he was with when the 1910 LaRue County census was taken. John R. Thompson was head of household 323. He was 64 years old and had been married 30 years to Mary C., age 60, who was listed as the mother of 8 children, 7 living. This was his third marriage, her first. The children in the home were: Sarah A., 19; Rosa A., 16; and Tom B., age 15 years.

JEFF GRIMES OF ATTILLA - Well Known Citizen of east side of the county a cancer victim.--
On last Thursday night. Nov. 8th., at the hour of midnight, Mr. Jefferson C. Grimes of Attilla, sank into eternal sleep, ending a life of 77 years of usefulness to his fellowman and to God. Mr. Grimes was born August 29, 1846, and was married to Emily J. Miller on Dec. 1873. to this union were born three children, Willie and Virgil of Ginseng, and Archie Grimes of Sullivan, Indiana. She preceded him to the grave June, 1887 and Mr. Grimes was then married to Mamie A. Howell October, 1902, who survives. To this union were born two children. Sammie and Robert Grimes, who are at home.
Mr. Grimes was a sufferer of cancer for several years but bore his sufferings faithfully. He was a devoted christian and each day of his illness rejoiced in His Love. Every since the establishment of Bethel Church he was a constant helper. At the funeral, Rev. J. D. Ferrill, who had been his friend for more than 60 years, gave the history of his boyhood days, telling how usefully it was spent making him an ideal ditizen and an ideal christian.
Funeral services were conducted at the home by Rev. A. L. Brown of Buffalo and Rev. J. T. McFarland of Taylor county Friday afternoon and attended by a large crown.l Interment in the family graveyard near his home. Besides the widow and five sons he leaves four sisters, three brothers, several grandchildren and a host of friends. Sympathy goes out to the bereaved family.

BUILDING THE STONE CHIMNEY AT NANCY LINCOLN INN

On a warm summer day in 1930 as Pleasant Skaggs, his sons Willie and Herman, and Ted Stone plowed corn in the fields on their farm on Big Brush Creek in northern Taylor County, they saw two men dressed in white shirts and ties coming across the field. They knew something out of the ordinary was afoot because men in white shirts and ties didn't ordinarily venture into that neck of the woods except on Sunday or at church. The two men were Jim Howell, the son of James Mason "Mace" Howell, and Tim Hurst, the son-in-law of Dutch Ferrill. They wanted to know if Plez would be interested in building the fireplace and chimney for a new inn that had been built adjacent to the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Site, midway between Hodgenville and Buffalo in LaRue County.
The inn was known as the Nancy Lincoln Inn and had been built in 1928 along with some cabins. The inn was built of large chestnut logs and is still standing today. The Cabins were rented to visitors at the "Lincoln Farm", as it was known locally. The property was developed, owned, and operated by Mace Howell. Now the owners had decided that a fireplace was needed in the inn.
Why did Howell and Hurst seek out Plez Skaggs? Plez's father, Benjamin Owen Skaggs, a Civil War veteran, had done considerable stone work and Plez had grown up working with his father. Ben's occupation was listed as stonemason on his death certificate. In fact, Plez may have surpassed his father with his construction skills. It is said that Plez was the one that Ben turned to about construction problems. Plez also worked as a blacksmith and had a full set of tools for shoeing horses, woodworking and stone cutting.
Plez agreed to quarry the stones and build the fireplace and chimney for 75 dollars. To help get the work done, Plez hired Will Darnel, Omer Warren, Sam Skaggs, and Richard Owens for 50 cents per day, per man.
The first task was to quarry the stones. Plez chose to use stone from the backyard of his home which he had built in 1912. The house had been built on a wooded slope below a spring which provided cool running water to the backyard. Some stone had already been removed during the construction of the house and used to build a wall along the lower side of the site. Plez saw a number of advantages in using this site; it was close to home, literally in his backyard; it was shaded by trees; and removing the stone would enlarge the level area behind his house. It also provided "green" rock, limestone which had not been exposed to weathering. Weathered rock was more difficult to cut and was more prone to cracking. So first they had to remove dirt and layers of weathered rock to get to the layers of the "green" limestone. Then grooves were cut in the top of the layer with a tool similar to an ax. After a groove was cut, small iron wedges were driven carefully into the groove until the strip of limestone broke free. Then the strip was cut into segments, giving building blocks.
The blocks had to be cut to the proper size in order to fit together and make the fireplace the desired size. To insure his was done, Plez constructed the fireplace in his backyard, fitting the blocks closely together. The fitting was done using a "pointing" tool to straighten, smooth, and trim the edges of the stones. As the blocks were trimmed, piles of chips and dust accumulated. Plez's sons, Willie and Herman, shoveled this into a wheelbarrow and dumped it above the stone wall along the lower side of the front yard.
For the top of the fireplace opening, Plez wanted to use about five tapered blocks across the top, in a keystone fashion, to support the stones above. But the owners wanted a single, long stone placed across the top of the opening. Plez warned that a large stone might crack under the weight of the stones above and from the heat of the fire. He believed that the smaller keystones would adjust themselves to support the weight and would be more resistant to cracking. For whatever reason, a one-piece lintel was agreed upon. Plez decided to place an iron bar across the opening under the lintel to help support it.
After the fireplace and chimney were built up to about six feet above the base, the stones were marked with carpenter's chalk, then disassembled and loaded by Willie and Herman onto a steel-tired farm wagon, about four stones per load. Bales of straw were placed between the stones to prevent them bouncing around on the rought road and chipping each other. The wagon was pulled by a team of horses down the slope to a ford across Big Brush Creek which was about 3/4 mile north of the Union Church, then climbed to the Oak Ridge in Green County where State Road 2762 runs today. There the stones were unloaded in the yard of a home owned by Tom Todd Etherton. The Stones later were loaded onto a truck owned by E. S. Ferrill for the trip to the site of the inn. The exact route used for this is not known, but the truck probably passed through Wards, on the Green and LaRue County line, and then through Gatton, Mt. Tabor, and Buffalo, en route to the inn.
For the upper, narrow part of the chimney, stones were quarried from the vicinity of the South Fork of the Nolin River, much nearer to Lincoln Farm. Since the chimney portion was the same from top to bottom, pre-fitting was not necessary - the stones were simply cut to a standard size and hauled to the inn. Plez and his men formed the foundation of the fireplace, reassembled the marked blocks, and joined them with a mortar of lime and sand. They hoisted the stones as the chimney grew using a hoist they constructed on site.
The old chestnut log inn and the limestone fireplace and chimney still stand today. Unfortunately, Plez's misgivings about the lintel stone have been proven valid, The lintel stone is cracked. But it is held safely in place by the iron bar Plez placed under it.
